I'm all for the slow burn, the careful, winding, tip-toeing into development of character, plot, nuance...I'm here for all of it, which is why I crept my way through chapters of Lucy's poor decisions, emotional vapidity and seriously lack of friendship (why do those girls still like her?) to say nothing of baby Patrick Bateman's somehow implausible hold on seemingly intelligent women. Glacier pace aside, what had me flinging this book across the room was that after CHAPTERS of breathy looks, deep stares, smoldering glaces and laborious sex scenes - everything is tidied up in a few pages. **SPOILERS AHEAD** "Sorry I threw away your priceless family jewels, mom!" It's cool - let's go get breakfast! "(WHAT?!) "Hey guy I threw away my college career for, I see you now and I realize that you're totally not a great guy but after 6 years - one look had me convinced! " (WHAT?!) "Oh and you murdered that girl (I know, I got a message from beyond) Oh well, now you know I know and I guess that's cool, guess noone will ever know you're a murderer!" And seriously...who calls their mother to gab and discuss major life changes AT THEIR BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.See: Lucy is a terrible friend. I had high hopes, but the ending was flatter than Lucy's abs after her daily hot yoga class (and yeah, we get it, she was painfully thin). I loved the alternating points of view chapter by chapter between Lucy & Stephen. If you haven't dated a Stephen (a sociopath) -- this book may not resonate with you. The author (Carla) so adequately describes Lucy's thinking vs. Stephen, but what I liked most is that the character Stephen wasn't the most good looking, and slightly overweight, nothing remarkable about him but Lucy (& the other girls) is drawn to him, and his charm. That's where I think the author really nailed it, in most books or movies the "bad guy" in the relationship is usually remarkable, good looking, all things going for him but that's often not the case in real life --and what people on the outside of a relationship don't understand. I really liked the friend dynamics, Lucy's girl friends reminding her to get rid of him etc.I would suggest reading this book if you get it free (or very cheap) because of the solid character development, BUT the plot is terrible, and there's no real events. I think the story is more about perception, and "love", and how easy it is to be charmed, bottom line: even smart girls fall into it.Lastly, the end was so blah, and the "big reveal" wasn't a big reveal at all, it was exactly what anyone would've assumed from the first connection made earlier in the book.
